Who Can Benefit

Processing information can be a difficult task for children, adolescents and adults, particularly those with learning disabilities, auditory processing difficulties, sensory processing difficulties, attention deficits, anxiety or autism. By employing scientifically-proven therapies in a safe, relaxed environment that includes purposeful activities and interactions, Key to Me has helped hundreds of individuals improve how they process information, which has, in turn, helped them makes gains in attention, academics and communication as well as reduce anxiety.

Auditory Processing Disorder refers to a collection of difficulties an individual may have when processing auditory information including difficulty understanding speech in noisy environments, difficulty following directions and difficulty discriminating between similar-sounding speech sounds. It can be difficult to identify because many of the characteristic behaviors--asking for repetition or clarification, difficulty with spelling and/or reading, not responding or seemingly not paying attention--can be characteristics of more than one disorder. Finally, there are many different types of auditory processing deficits and issues can manifest in a variety of ways. Therefore, individualized therapy is critical for remediation.

Many of our children today struggle to learn. They may struggle with math, reading, spelling, reading comprehension, writing or attention. For many, this struggle has a lot to do with how their brain is processing information. When the communication of information to the brain is compromised, as it is with a learning disability, learning can be an arduous task even with tutors, extra help and in-class support. Key to Me Therapy has helped hundreds of children break through this learning barrier by improving their processing. When the information coming in is timely, clear and accurate, then it is easier to use for learning purposes. In addition, learning disabilities can generate heightened anxiety, which will impede all learning. Improved processing can reduce this anxiety so that the brain is open to learning.

Anxiety is the body's physiological response to fear. For some, anxiety is a creeping feeling that everything is not okay. For others, the physiological feelings of anxiety are overwhelming, which can cause them to become immobilized, aggressive, hysterical or depressed. In addition, anxiety can be caused, or made worse, by processing difficulties. Luckily, sound therapy can play a crucial role in healing the body's reactions to stress.

Inattention, distractibility and impulsivity are issues many individuals struggle with in our current culture. Some have been diagnosed with ADD or ADHD, while others seem to find themselves “in the syndrome mix” with a smattering of symptoms related to attention and processing deficits. What’s more, processing difficulties--auditory processing disorder, sensory processing disorder and learning disabilities--often include difficulty sustaining attention among other challenges.

Whether someone is dealing with true ADD/ADHD or struggling with attention as a byproduct of other processing deficits, improving processing speed and accuracy can help reduce distractibility, calm impulsivity and improve concentration. Even chemically-induced attention issues benefit from improving the neurological processing of information.

We all perceive the world through our senses. For some, however, these perceptions are not accurate. In mild form, that may mean misperceiving the color of one's shirt, In the extreme, it can mean being so sensitive to sound that you cannot leave home. Sensitivities to sounds, textures, smells and touch can make it difficult or impossible to participate fully in society. When someone has a sensory processing disorder, encouragement alone can't change these misperceptions. What's worse, these misperceived sensations put the body is a constant state of anxiety, anticipating when the next offense may occur. Healing these perceptions is the best way to reduce the stress and suffering someone with sensory processing disorder undergoes.

Individuals on the autism spectrum have a unique way of processing the world. For those with autism, environmental sounds can be confusing, offensive or unintelligible. Their difficulties in understanding and communicating are often compounded by reactive sensory systems that tend to keep them in a heightened state of fight-or-flight. Science has proven that when an individual is in this state of heightened anxiety, they are not equipped to learn or communicate. Luckily, children with autism can make significant developmental gains in response to sound-based therapies that are offered in a safe, fun, and interactive environment.
