A few weeks ago I ran into a parent of one of the children we worked with last year. She threw her arms around me and hugged me for a long while. She then stepped back and said, “ It is so great to see you and proceded to showed me a video of her adorable four-year-old son with autism having a conversation. "I tell everyone that Key to Me is the reason my son is talking" she said. I felt so elated to hear him able to express himself, to say all the things that were so difficult for him prior to Key to Me. What struck me even more was how happy he was in the video; not struggling to share his thoughts, not over-stimulated and stressed by his environment. Just content to play and talk. Does he still have a ways to go? Sure. But the progress he made in a relatively short period of time is amazing.
I can relate so well to what this mother was feeling because I was that mother. My son didn’t speak until doing Listening therapy at 3 ½ , and, because of this miracle Chris and I started Key to Me Therapy 11 years ago, so we, too, could help other children overcome obstacles in their development. Over the years, we have seen this amazing therapy help hundreds of children; some with autism, others with ADD/ADHD, Learning Disabilities or Anxiety. We’ve watched countless children become more mature and more comfortable in themselves and their environments, which has enabled their brains to develop further in areas of learning, communicating and socializing. It has been nothing short of miraculous.
I wanted to share this story during Autism Awareness month to let other parents know that there is hope, that there are ways to help your child overcome sensory and communication struggles so that they can be happier and more comfortable every day. I plan to share more stories over the next few months in order to inspire and give hope to those who need it. I also encourage our families to take a minute to share your child’s story as a way to reach parents who are searching and in need.
